I don't remember now how a copy of this book first fell into my lap, but I do remember sitting at the large desk in my room when I was in high school, curled up in my chair, trying to stretch the novel longer by reading the last lines over and over。 Years later, after shedding much of my over-romantic tendencies, this book is still one of my favorite go-tos。 It's not particularly heady or complicated, but it's so expertly told it's no wonder Miyazaki chose this book to base his movie from。The pr I don't remember now how a copy of this book first fell into my lap, but I do remember sitting at the large desk in my room when I was in high school, curled up in my chair, trying to stretch the novel longer by reading the last lines over and over。 Years later, after shedding much of my over-romantic tendencies, this book is still one of my favorite go-tos。 It's not particularly heady or complicated, but it's so expertly told it's no wonder Miyazaki chose this book to base his movie from。The premise is intriguing, set in a world similar enough to our own to be familiar, but filled with magic and strange customs enough to make us curious。 The characters grow in unexpected ways and even though I confess I'd seen the movie before reading this book, I could not predict what would happen next。 The story is fun and (dare I say it) cute, but anchored in real and universal enough problems that the contradiction was pleasant。 As Howl struggles with his own past and identity, we see Sophie find herself and grow ever more powerful, claiming agency for herself and really bringing balance to the world。I adore this book and will read it over and over still。 。。。more

• A prescription for joy in a bookish format •Incredible, magical, comforting and adorable! Simply couldn't put this book down, and that says a lot。 🏰 I'm so glad that I picked up the book first, before watching Miyazaki's adaptation。 (So excited about this 🙈) All of the characters were so interesting, flawed, contagious and multi-dimensional (both literally and metaphorically) that they felt like friends。 All in all, reading this book was such a feel-good experience。 Filled with childlike wonde • A prescription for joy in a bookish format •Incredible, magical, comforting and adorable! This was fun! It was interesting to compare all the similarities and differences between this and the Ghibli animation (which I've watched approximately 10 000 times)。 This was fun! I like the book and I like the movie although they are a bit different from each other。The magic is subtle and quirky and the characters are rich! It's a great tale of what happens to Sophie when she is cursed by the Witch of the Waste。I feel like whatever I write here is going to give something away, there are so many facets to the story! Can you believe I've lived for 23 years without even once reading or watching Howl's Moving Castle ? Well now I finally did (read the book, at least, but the movie's next👀)。 It's a super cute book。 At first I didn't like how Sophie, the main character, just seemed to accept whatever bad thing happened to her, but I realised pretty fast that this is just the case for the whole book。 Things just are , they don't need to be explained or justified。 And once I accepted this fact, the book was reall Can you believe I've lived for 23 years without even once reading or watching Howl's Moving Castle ? (which isn't that common for me, honestly)。 This book left me with a happy feeling and I'll definitely read it again sometime☺️。 。。。more

I absolutely love this book。 Sophie, Howl and Michael are some of my very favorite characters and I love getting a chance to revisit them every other year or so。 Spells, witches, kings and wizards make up the characters of this story but overall, it’s a sense of wonder and following your heart that leads me to continue to reread it。 The movie follows a similar plot line with tweaks here and there to keep things in the cinematic line of true love。 But equals enjoyable。

Ones of my favorite books no word can describe how much i love this story

This is way way way way better than the movie also totally different, but the feeling is similar, if not much better。Howl is a drama queen here too and Sophie is such an old lady lmao

An absolute joy, very engaging, light and funny。Left me smiling。

It's very creative and fun to imagine。 I appreciate that it challenged the tropes of gender norms (to an *extent*--and not always) and this idea that Sophie is just trying her best and that she sometimes messes up and sometimes succeeds is nice。 In this story, the hero can be unexpected and doesn't have to be even close to perfect, which is refreshing。 It's very creative and fun to imagine。 I appreciate that it challenged the tropes of gender norms (to an *extent*--and not always) and this idea that Sophie is just trying her best and that she sometimes messes up and sometimes succeeds is nice。 In this story, the hero can be unexpected and doesn't have to be even close to perfect, which is refreshing。 。。。more

This is the second time I read this book - but the first in English - and I've realised how many details and how many images I missed reading it the first time! And I have the impression I still have't got all the details of this amazing book。 I don't know if I will be able to watch the film after reading it。 Not because the film is bad, but I like this story better than the adaptation of Miyazaki。 This is the second time I read this book - but the first in English - and I've realised how many details and how many images I missed reading it the first time! Raise your hand if you read this book mainly because you watched the Studio Ghibli movie adaptation。。。 I had heard good things about this book, even though I was expressly warned that it was quite different from the film。 Now that I've read it, I have to confess that, while charming and fun, I think I prefer the movie。 Blasphemy, I know, but the plot of the book feels a little more scattered, and the characters more caustic than in the film。Sophie is the eldest of three daughters, and so feels c Raise your hand if you read this book mainly because you watched the Studio Ghibli movie adaptation。。。 I had heard good things about this book, even though I was expressly warned that it was quite different from the film。 Now that I've read it, I have to confess that, while charming and fun, I think I prefer the movie。 Blasphemy, I know, but the plot of the book feels a little more scattered, and the characters more caustic than in the film。Sophie is the eldest of three daughters, and so feels consigned to an unexciting life in the family's hat shop。 But when she crosses an infamous witch and gets cursed -- turning into an old woman in the process -- she sets out to find a way to break said curse。 Her journey takes her to the mobile castle of the feared wizard Howl, said to eat the hearts of young women! But Howl isn't nearly as fearsome as she was led to believe, and as she settles in as Howl's cleaning lady -- butting heads with the bratty wizard, a feisty fire demon, and Howl's hapless apprentice Michael -- she finds herself in a position to not just break her own curse, but to help Howl in the process! The plot of this book feels a little scattered, without a clear goal in mind until the last third or so of the book。 Plot threads seem to be tossed in at random, and the characters do a LOT of snarking and insulting of one another, which can be entertaining but gets grating when it seems to be their only way of communicating with each other。 And I found the inclusion of the "real world" -- with Howl able to travel between this world of magic and modern-day Wales -- a bit jarring。 Despite my complaints, though, I still enjoyed the book。 The world has a delightful charm to it, and there was plenty of humor to leaven the more serious elements。 Jones' writing is decent, even good, and while her characters' snark wears a little thin after awhile, I still appreciated her making them fleshed-out and flawed。 And in all honesty, it was still interesting and fun to read this book and compare it to the film, and see what was similar and what changed between the page and the screen。Perhaps I'm a heathen for preferring the movie to the book in this instance。。。 but in my mind, it's the truth。 The movie eases up on the insults between the characters and provides cohesion to a scattered story。 The book and the movie are BOTH quite enjoyable despite their differences, however, and I encourage fans of the movie to check out the book as well。 。。。more

You know, there’s a million different ways a book can be bad。 The writing can be grammatically incorrect, the plot could be swiss cheese-like, the characters might be wooden or infuriating or pitiful—the list goes on and on。 Badness has real variety; all my three star (and less) reviews tend to run long。 But when something is good, it can be hard to talk about。 Good is good。 What else is there to say? I have a lot to say about Howl’s Moving Castle。 This book。 THIS book, man。 Howl is the only book I consistently reach for。 I keep a copy on my bedside table just so I can pick it up and read a couple pages whenever I want。 Well, I say “a couple pages” but usually a couple turns into a near reread before I can stop myself。 Howl’s Moving Castle is just so damn fun。 Fun and funny and clever and compulsively readable。 The writing in this book is infused with a fantastic and easy momentum; each sentence effortlessly carries you to the next and the next and the next until you’ve reached the end of the story。 There’s no lull, no dull section where the plot stalls。 Howl and Sophie and Michael and Calcifer are some of my favorite characters of all time。 They squabble, they laugh, they get to know each other。 They fall in love。 Sophie is a marvelous protagonist, and a fascinating person in her own right。 Every time I read the book I pick up on a new detail about her I previously missed。 And of course, there’s Howl。 Howl is The One Man Who Has Rights。 Like, Wynne Jones somehow wrote the only wizard who f*cks。 He is just, unbeatable—brilliant, arrogant, sarcastic, showstopping, unique, iconic, DIVA, king。 I’m obsessed。 I wish to god I lived in a moving castle, because if I did, I’d basically have to be as cool as Howl。Anyway I’m gonna wrap this up, I guess, before I start repeating myself。 Like I said before, there’s only so many compliments you can dole out before you’re not really saying anything anymore。 In summary, Howl’s Moving Castle is the kind of book that makes me want to write, because it’s magic—the kind of magic that makes you happy to be alive, that makes you happy you’re here, now, in a world where you can pick up a book in a bookstore one day, and fall in love。 ❤️ 。。。more

I read the book because I watched the movie and was curious about the novel。 I loved the book! I thought that it added a lot of details to certain parts of the movie, it made more sense to me。 But for the book itself, I thought it was great! I love the narrative and the breaking of the fairy trope for Sophie to become her own person。 I think this is a great, light fantasy book that is heartwarming。 A great read for anyone, all ages。 Warnings for the faint of heart: none!
